#MakerMondayChallenges Will be the Death of Me

1 min read

This weeks we were asked to hack the credibility of a website by remixing the author, and it's claims. So typically my hand goes right up because I have NO idea what that means. Through trial and error, and plenty of help from Dr. McVerry, I finally understood what it was that I was supposed to be doing and I did it! Unfortunately, it did not want to save part of my project which really upset me because I worked so hard on it and was proud of it, so I was only able to post one, but that is okay because I feel as though I knew how to do this even though it would not save all the way.

Online Research/Group Work/Reflection

1 min read

Recently I was assigned a task in one of my education classes where we were asked to pick a partner and work on an online research paper together. Fun right?... WRONG! Being a commuter student I found it very challenging to find time to work on the project together so we decided to do it in a google doc (thanks EDU 106). If it were not for this class I would not know how to use a google docs because I used it for the very first time when we did our group assignment in this class. I guess what I am trying to say is that if it were not for this class, I would have probably did poorly on that group assignment for my other education class. This class has taught me so much about not only working together, but doing so using technology!

THANKS EDU 106!!!!

Small Differences Matter: The DNA of Online Reading Comprehension

1 min read

Although everytime that I tried to copy and paste this link to hypothes.is it would not let me annotate I still obviously read this article and found it very interesting. Great job keeping me in focus, Professor McVerry!

In "Small Differences Matter: The DNA of Online Reading Comprehension" by my professor Greg McVerry stresses on the fact that small differences matter. He goes into the fact that us humans, and chimpanzees only have a 2% difference in DNA.

WHAT?

This being said, he believes that readers of online sources need to fully understand and do all of the skills to become a good online reader and to fully understand what they are reading online. This small difference can change the world for readers out there.

Construction and/or Creation of Online Content

1 min read

I was not sure how I felt reading the title of this article that we had to read, "Construction and/or Creation of Online Content," mainly because that is all we ever talk about in class. Something that this article did do for me was really open my eyes to the difference between "construction" and "creation". I guess hearing the two so many times made me think that they were interchangable when they are in fact different, which is what W. Ian O'Byrne is trying to prove and I am glad that I actually read this because it taught me the difference. He states that, "creation can be viewed simply as the act of producing, or causing to exist. Construction is the building or assembling of an infrastructure," this means that you basically can't have one without the other. They are not interchangable, creation is producing online, and construction following through with it and building it. Without these steps children will not be able to learn as well using the internet.

Reading Images: Multimodality, Representation and New Media

2 min read

In Reading Images: Multimodality, Representation and New Media By Gunther Kress, he is talking about al of the different ways to communicate and get your idea across and how all of these different ways of communicating has shaped us as learners.

While this reading was very hard for me to understand do to the layout and the confusing topic, what I got from this article was that the way that we learn is very different do to texts and screens. Showing something with a picture, for example a picture in a book can be portrayed as something different then explaining the picture out with words. When the author says,"each mode forces me into making certain kinds of commitments about meaning, intended or not. The choice of mode has profound effects on meaning, and textbook designers, for instance, need to be aware of such meaning effects of different modes," it made me think of how sometimes I learn better looking at pictures or watching videos, rather than reading a book. If that is the point the author is trying to make then I agree with him because I feel that everyone learns differently and the way that something something is presented is very important to a learner.

HOLY REMIX PHOTO

1 min read

For one of our assignments in Edu106 we were told to remix a picture using a website called Pixlr. Seeing as I am terrible with all things internet related one could probably tell that I was not thrilled. Our professor was giving us tips on how to make our remix pictures really cool by doing an effect called layering. Layering is where you take two photos and you layer them one on top of another. When this is done correctly it fades nicely into the other background picture, but when this is done by Ashley it turns out like this...

As I am sure you could imagine my excitement when after almost an hour of messing around on the site I could only come up with this... I was looking at everyone elses remix photos and they were coming out awesome! What am I doing wrong?

TO BE CONTINUED (hopefully)

Monday Maker Challenge, About Me

1 min read

On Monday, our Monday Maker Challenge was to make an about me page using Mozilla. Whenever we use Mozilla I try really hard not to roll my eyes and sink down in my seat because I know whenever we use it I am going to get super frustrated and make something that is incorrect and looks absolutly horrible. This time was different! At first I was stubborn and could not figure out how to get the picture on there but after some time I figured it out and I am so excited to say that I have actually made a Monday Maker Challenge the correct way!

So... Check it out below!!!

Children Know More

1 min read

In Confronting the Challenges of Particatory Culture by Henry Jenkins he states that "Children and youths do indeed know more about these new media environments than most parents and teachers," (15). I agree with this statement because children do know more about technology than their teachers and parents. As much as people make fun of the idea of children having iphones and laptops at such a young age, people have to remember that they are the future and if they know how to use their iphones and their laptops at such a young age they will know how to use technology to their advantage when they are older. The reason that there is so much conflict between the older generations and the younger generations revolving children with technology is because typically the older generations do not know how to use technology and do not understand its importance in education.
